Jackalope Cult Cinema Presents: Drop Dead Gorgeous (Double Feature)

Jackalope Cult Cinema Presents: Drop Dead Gorgeous on August 9th at the Gryphon Theatre

Join us on Sunday, August 9th for an evening that feels delightfully, unmistakably Jackalope Cult Cinema.

First and foremost, we’re honored to be partnering up with Wyoming Humanities to bring you the film “Before Wyoming: The West in 1776.” This documentary provides a fascinating glimpse into the landscape around us long before it became the Wyoming we know today. We’ll let the film do the talking, but trust us: it’s a thoughtful way to begin an evening of curiosity, conversation, and community.

✨Then…✨

Fluff your hair. Polish your tiara. Adjust your sash. It’s pageant time.

This month, we’ll also be screening the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), one of the sharpest, funniest, and most delightfully twisted comedies to come out of the late ‘90s.

Set in the fiercely competitive world of small-town Minnesota beauty pageants, it’s packed with unforgettable performances, endlessly quotable one-liners, and enough dark humor to make you wonder how this movie ever got made. Fair warning: it is very much a product of its era, with some language and humor that reflects the late ‘90s, but beneath all of that is a brilliantly crafted satire that has earned every bit of its cult-classic status.

At Jackalope Cult Cinema, we love stories that spark conversations long after the credits roll. Sometimes that means discovering a new piece of Wyoming history. Sometimes it means laughing until your sides hurt at the wonderfully absurd. This month, you get both.

Gather your fellow weirdos, movie lovers, history buffs, and cult cinema devotees, and join us for another unforgettable evening.

“Before Wyoming: The West in 1776” will be presented by Wyoming Humanities. This opportunity has been made possible through the By the People: Conversations Beyond 250 initiative.

By the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils across the United States, its territories, and the District of Columbia in collaboration with local partners. Together, these programs explore 250 years of the nation's cultural life and imagine its shared future. The initiative was developed by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage as a complement to the 2026 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
